SPELLING FOCUS: Many words contain Greek and Latin word parts. Jud, jur, and jus mean “law” or “judge” . Crit and reg mean “to judge” or “to guide”. Pol and dem mean “people” or “city”.

- jury – The jury listened to the witnesses.
- judicial – Lawyers work in the judicial system.
- critical – The reviewer was critical of the film.
- regular – Doctors recommend regular exercise.
- regal – The princess had regal manners.
- regional – The senator held regional meetings.

- policy – The coach has a strict absence policy.
- metropolis – New York City is a great metropolis.
- perjury – He lied in court, committing perjury.
- jurisdiction – The police are under his jurisdiction.
- judicious – Her choice of speakers was judicious.
- critique – I wrote a critique of the new book.
- hypocrite – A hypocrite only pretends to be kind.
- regiment – A regiment of soldiers marched to war.
- regime – The king had a peaceful regime.
- cosmopolitan – She is sophisticated and cosmopolitan.
- demographic – The census includes demographic data.
- epidemic – He became ill during the flu epidemic.
