Hello First Grade Families!
Happy third trimester! Tonight there is no math homework due to the Chapter 6 math test. Students should still be logging onto Raz-Kids, reading for 15-30 minutes and filling out their reading log, and completing their fluency tic, tac, toe.
Because we are in the third trimester and we are even closer to second grade, today we went over some areas in which the first graders need to work on their responsibility:
Math Homework
Students should complete the assigned Math practice pages each night. Because it is third trimester, all the workbook pages will be collected on Friday, and entered into Gradelink at the end of the week. Students should put their names (first and last) and the date on the pages, rip them out of the workbook, staple all pages together, and place them in the “Return to School” pocket of their homework folder on Friday. This will hold the students accountable for their math homework and prepare them for second grade.
Fluency Homework Practice
For the daily fluency tic, tac, toe activities, students should complete one activity on a different sheet of lined paper each night. The student’s name, date, AND name of the activity (ex. “ABC Order) should be at the top of the lined paper. At the end of the week, students should staple all activities together and staple colored in tic, tac, toe board to the top with the student’s name (first and last) on the tic, tac, toe board. This will hold the students accountable for their fluency words and prepare them for second grade as well.
Homework Folders
The students have been doing an awesome job remembering to turn in their homework folders, but I would like to see all first graders continue to work on their classroom responsibility with regards to turning in their homework folders in the morning. This includes making sure that the first graders are turning in their folders and hanging up their backpacks by themselves. I have observed parents and other family members doing this for the first graders, and though the help is appreciated, it is time the first graders take ownership of this daily routine. In second grade the first graders will be expected to do this on their own, so this will be great practice for them! Please encourage your child to turn in their homework folder in the mornings on the own.
Name & Date on Papers
This is a reminder that students should continue to write their first and last name on their papers. In the third trimester, they are also encouraged to write the date on their papers as well. If their first and last name is not on their papers, Mrs. Ray and I will be taking off 0.5 point. If the date is not on their paper, it will be an additional 0.5 point off. This practice will help the students prepare for the headings they will be expected to put on their papers/homework in second grade.
Thank you for your cooperation as we enter this third trimester and help transition our first graders to second grade! Time is going by so fast!
Warmly,
Ms. Lozano
