Dear First Grade Families,
I pray you all had a nice three day weekend! We had a great day back to school today, which even included an assembly about some of the pioneers of aviation, like Bessie Coleman and Amelia Earhart! Listed below is the homework and some important reminders for the week:
Homework–
Math: Student’s only homework is ST Math for today. If your child is unable to do ST Math at home, or if your iPad is only showing the message, “completed assigned games,” please let me know as soon as possible! Tomorrow and Thursday your child should complete the assigned pages in their Go Math workbook. Go Math homework should be turned in on Friday. –
Sight Word Journal: Because of the three day week, your child should only complete 3 activities for the week using all four sight words. Sight word journals should be turned in on Friday. The sight words for the week are:
- may, made, come, get
–Reading Log- This week for the reading log, students should read any book, and on their reading log identify if the book is fiction or non-fiction. They should then complete the sentence to say why the book is fiction or non-fiction. Because of the three day week, your child only has to complete 3 portions of the reading log. Remember this is checked every day! Let me know if you have any questions on this!
Tests
-Your child will take two tests on Friday, March 22nd:
- The Chapter 7 Math Test
- The Sight Word Test (students will be tested on the spelling of their words)
-Your child’s homework is a great way to study for these tests, but feel free to incorporate other forms of studying, for example making flash cards, creating extra practice problems, etc.! Let me know if you need any extra support at home in helping your child study.
Third Trimester Expectations
-The third trimester has arrived, which means your children are just months away from entering second grade! This is an exciting time, but it is also a time when our expectations grow to further our preparations for the next grade level. Here are some of the expectations that I am looking out for:
- First AND last name on ALL assignments.
- The date on ALL assignments (written as March 19, 2019 OR 3/19/19)
- A uppercase/capital letter at the beginning of EVERY sentence.
- A end mark (period, exclamation point, or question mark) at the end of EVERY sentence.
- All first graders should read for AT LEAST 20-30 minutes every day at home. (NOTE: This means that if the students read one book and it only takes them 10 minutes, they should read another book to complete their 20 minutes of reading!)
- All first graders should work on ST Math at home in addition to math homework (whether it is assigned or not). In the classroom we do at least 90 minutes a week, however students still need to be working on ST Math in order to complete first grade by the end of the year. Some students are almost done with first grade ST Math, which is amazing!
- All first graders should follow all classroom rules and school Tribes agreements without being reminded inside and outside the classroom.
- All first graders should turn-in their green homework folders every day and their homework on Fridays by themselves in order to help them be more responsible. The first graders are doing a great job with this so far, and I want them to continue to work on being more responsible each and every day!
-I am encouraging your children to meet these expectations every day, and it would be helpful if you could all encourage your children to work towards these third trimester expectations at home too! Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation! I am excited for a fun rest of the week full of learning with your children!
Warmly,
Ms. Lozano
