Greetings, 6th Grade Parents,
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!
We’ve had quite an eventful past couple of weeks with College Fair, Halloween, and All Saints Day. I’m so incredibly proud of the 6th graders for participating in their first College Fair as they presented on various local high schools. It was so fun also seeing them all dressed up for Halloween, then as saints the following day to process in for a beautiful All Saints Day Mass.
We have another busy week coming up, so I just wanted to give you some updates…
GUEST SPEAKER: Patrick Novecosky – TUES 11/8
How John Paul II Changed the World
We will welcome author and international speaker Patrick Novecosky to our school on Nov. 8 at 10:30 am. Patrick met Pope St. John Paul II five times and wrote a wonderful book about his legacy — 100 Ways John Paul II Changed the World. Patrick will offer his book for sale ($20) after his talk, but you can pre-order it before Nov. 6. He will bring a signed copy for you or your child to pick up after his talk. You can find his book and other items here: payhip.com/novamedia. You can learn more about Patrick here: patricknovecosky.com
FIELD TRIP: Christian Service 4 Life – WED 11/9
6th, 7th and 8th grade classes will attend CS4Life at the Shrine Auditorium on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. This is a Catholic event with engaging speakers. Our very own Archbishop Jose Gomez will be present as well as special guest speaker, Fr. Robert Spitzer. Your child will need to wear Formal Mass Uniform and bring a sack lunch. We will return in time for regular dismissal.
MEET THE MASTERS – THUR 11/10
We’re excited for our first MTM lesson this Thursday! Mrs. Lomu has graciously volunteered to lead our session on the artist Dega. If any parents would like to help out next trimester, please let us know!
NO SCHOOL: Veterans Day – FRI 11/11
Please note that school will be closed on Friday for Veterans Day.
UPCOMING FIELD TRIP: USC – MON 11/14
Professor Stefano Rebeggiani (SAP parent) will be leading the junior high on a campus tour of USC and visit to the Caruso Catholic Center. We will attend Mass with their chaplain Fr. Richard Chen, and they will be providing a pizza lunch for all of the students. Please make sure that your child is dressed in Formal Mass uniform and brings a snack and water as well. We are checking to see if the bookstore may be able to accommodate us for souvenirs. I will update the students once I hear back so they can bring cash if they would like to buy something.
IMPORTANT DUE DATES: Student Service Hours and 100% AR Goal – FRI 11/18
The 6th graders must submit their forms for at least 3 service hours, which counts for 10% of their Religion grade (10 hours total for the year). They must also have 100% of their AR Goal and 85% accuracy by Friday 11/18.
ELA TUTORING CHANGE: TUES & THUR
Since we are finished with altar server training, I will be moving ELA tutoring to Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:10-4:00pm starting this week. Students may also take supervised AR quizzes with me during this time.
We continue with our in-class high school presentations for a Language grade. The rest of the 6th graders who have not received their Rough Drafts back will have the opportunity to correct them before the end of the trimester. Going through their essays has given me insight into what kind of writing support they need this year, so we will be working on sentence composition, capitalization, punctuation rules.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you so much!
Blessings,
Mrs. Dyogi
