Dear 6th grade Parents,
Happy Belated New Year! I hope you all had a restful and blessed Christmas season. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the wonderful gifts and treats for my birthday and Christmas – I truly loved and appreciated them all!
It was wonderful to be back with your children this week. I apologize for the delayed Weekly Update – time just got away from me – but you will get both a recap and some announcements for upcoming events… 🙂
ELA CURRICULUM
We have continued our novel study on The Bronze Bow, an inspiring faith journey of Daniel, a young boy who struggled with the loss of his parents at the hands of the Romans during the time of Jesus. The students are enjoying it, as they are learning about the Jewish religion, practices, and culture from which our Christian faith has its roots. To enrich their learning, I am occasionally showing clips from The Chosen TV series that highlight Jesus in His public ministry, allowing the students to compare and contrast the content they read in their novel and in the Gospels, in addition to the brief scenes that they watch from the episodes. They also watch some experiences of the Apostles as they endure trials under Roman occupation, are then chosen to follow Jesus and eventually sent out to do the work that Jesus did.
Voyages Grammar and Word Study will be assigned regularly during the week, as well as additional exercises and essays to strengthen their writing skills. In 3rd Trimester, we will do an MLA Research Project on Marian Apparitions, so the students will get a solid foundation for internet research, MLA essay formatting, and in-text citations. Fluency and Oral Presentations will allow the students to practice reading aloud and speaking, and we will also discuss the value of nonverbal gestures/posture, eye contact, tone of voice, and word choice so that the students are equipped to have respectful in-person conversations with both peers and adults.
Please continue to monitor Google Classroom TO-DO List and Gradelink. I will input more assignment grades this weekend, so by Tuesday you should see all scores updated. If there are any issues or questions, please let me know.
STAR TESTING
The junior high students will have STAR testing next week for Math on Wednesday 1/18 and for Reading on Thursday 1/19 after Mass at 9am. This will count for Window 2, with the last STAR testing Window 3 to follow in May. Please make sure your child is well-rested and eats a good breakfast.
SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN – INTERNET SAFETY
Grades 6-8 will meet together on Monday 1/30 to learn about the importance of internet safety. Mr. Richardson passed out permission forms earlier this week. Please make return the signed forms as soon as possible so that your child can participate in the lesson. This topic is very relevant to our young people today, and they need to know how to protect themselves online.
Please note that we do not have school on MONDAY 1/16 to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. Thank you again for all that you do and the amazing support you give to us here at St. Anthony. We appreciate you!
Blessings,
Mrs. Dyogi
